Romain Tiercin dans son atelier

Based in Foix, at the foot of the Pyrenees, Romain Tiercin models, casts and patinates his own bronzes, born of wood and of empty space.

A craftsman’s heritage

As a child, Romain Tiercin drew, modelled clay and played music: his father introduced him to painting, and his mother supported his cello studies. His grandfather, a master carpenter and compagnon du devoir, passed on to him in his workshop a love of wood and the discipline of the hand.

From engineering to sculpture

After university studies, an exchange in Uruguay and a bicycle journey across Latin America, he returned to France with an engineering degree and worked first as an engineer, then as a manager. The birth of his first child and a difficult period led him to leave it all behind. He spent time in the forest and came back with his first works: chestnut branches with human forms, the starting point of a practice in which wood often comes before bronze.

A workshop and foundry built by hand

In Foix, in the Ariège, he built his own workshop and foundry and designed his own tools. He handles the whole process: modelling the wax, pouring bronze melted at around 1,160 °C, chasing and patina. His bronzes are produced in editions of eight plus four artist’s proofs, sometimes set on wooden, concrete or steel bases.

Void, balance and movement

Suspended dancers, leaning figures, bodies reaching for the sky: his sculptures play with void, tension and balance. His work follows two veins, one organic, with curved and living forms, the other urban, with more angular silhouettes. Against the fragility of living beings, he sets the permanence of bronze. Among his works: Danse, Le Guetteur, Le Baiser, Introspection, Résilience and Coup de foudre.

Monumental works and galleries

He also creates monumental pieces, such as La Sentinelle in Saint-Robert, in Corrèze, and La Vague in Lacanau. His work is shown by several galleries, including Bel Air Fine Art, Ki Galerie in Paris and Villa Domus.
