Born in Bangkok, Somsak Hanumas left computer science behind for painting. He overlays backgrounds, dots of color, and fine lines to bring light to life on the canvas.

Bangkok, 1980

Somsak Hanumas was born in 1980 in Bangkok, where he grew up and lived for most of his adult life. Destined for a career as a computer engineer, he studied at the King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang without ever forgetting his first passion, painting. With his degree in hand, he chose to dedicate himself to it and trained as a self-taught artist.

A Meticulous Technique

After painting a background on the canvas, he scatters numerous dots of color in a gradient across it, then traces lines over the top with a fine brush, covering the entire surface. Acrylic and lacquer, layer after layer: a canvas takes an average of eight to twelve weeks to complete.

From Landscape to Abstraction

His early canvases evoke landscapes that left a mark on him: a beach in Bangkok, a field during the monsoon, the edge of a jungle. Figuration gradually gave way to a pointillist and lyrical abstraction, where light and atmosphere matter more than the motif.

Recognition

Selected in 2022 for the European Center exhibition at the Palazzo Bembo, on the occasion of the Venice Biennale, Somsak Hanumas has seen his paintings join numerous private collections and foundations, including that of LVMH.
